History
-with no War of 1812 this guy makes greater success in settling Americans to Sierra Leone
-and success in bringing over some free blacks in the years onwards to Sherbro Island
-all the way till Cuffe's death in 1819
-begins regular ship contact
-rising tensions between US and UK under American Presidents > 1817-1825 James Monroe (Republican) begins move for establishing a separate colony
-establishment of American Colonization Society in 1820
-Cape Mesurado acquired as separate colony by gunpoint for settlement in 1824, creating Libertopolis as a city
-attempt to settle it interrupted by US's Wars > Luisiana War (1825-8)
-it has some settlement
-despite fears it would be undefended
-very narrowly defended by French to own the British
-postwar, waves of settlement come
-especially fostered by American Presidents > 1829-1837 Henry Clay (Republican, then National Republican) who gives it support
-Libertopolis grows rapidly into a sizeable town
-and some interior settlement, some wars
-with outbreak of US's Wars > Second Quasi War (1839-42), fears emerge of French sack
-inspires mass organization by settlers
-who force the ACS agents out
-declare the independence of Fredonia led by mulatto constitutional delegates
-no French sack comes
-with Recessions > Panic of 1842 and British Wars > New Granadine War of Independence (1848-52) US slave densities dramatically increase and due to use of slaves as collateral Bank of the United States becomes largest slaveowner in the US
-with price of slave collapsing American Presidents > 1845-1852 Daniel Webster (Unionist) † successfully gets agreement (unofficial) for Bank to send slaves to Fredonia in return for larger lump sum and increased capitalization at renewal
-Fredonia locates slaves into interior and founds new cities
-that such slaves are dark-skinned, not mulattos, means an increase in colorist tensions
-but in addition fears in South of increased slave densities -> revolt means increased deportation of free blacks
-eventual Fredonian Revolution in 1880s sees overthrow of mulatto elites by dark-skinned settlers
-who look to interior and are allied with certain native elements
-and get loans from Bank of the United States to expand into the interior
-thanks to powerful Colored vote who view Fredonia as light of freedom in pagan, slaveowning continent it's a pretty fair loan all things considered
-roads, rail get constructed into the interior
Sierra Leone
-w/ no War of 1812, many more black Americans move to Sierra Leone led by Paul Cuffe
-helps to enable cross-trade as well
-worried about it due to seeming subversiveness, American Colonization Society, cross of moderate antislavery types and pro-slavers, forms their own colonies nearby
-in early 1820s, black American migration to Sierra Leone dries up
-while ACS colonies become very unpopular among black Americans, kill off Sierra Leone migration by association
-colony gets sacked by French during Second French War (1821-32)
-when US's Wars > Second Quasi War (1839-42) occurs, American colonies fearing French raids fly British flag, essentially joining Sierra Leone
-with the exception of Maryland-in-Africa, which extends far into Ivory Coast
-and gets a lot of people due to American Presidents > 1845-1852 Daniel Webster (Unionist) †
